Limpopo on Executive Council Meeting

The Limpopo Province’s Executive Council at its meeting held in Polokwane on Wednesday, 17 June 2015 have noted the following progress made:

Infrastructure - CoGHSTA

The Executive Council have noted progress made in housing development and would like to encourage contractors to continue building quality houses for the people of this province. Nine hundred fifty-five (955) houses have been completed as at the end of May 2015, while a further 9446 houses are at various levels of construction and are expected to be completed before the end of the current financial year. A further 7 865 houses have been advertised for appointment of constructors.  

Education

Five hundred fifty (550) school projects have been completed as at 31 May and a further 1238 are under construction and may be completed in the current financial year. A further 186 projects are at pre-construction stage.

Health

Sixty-five (65) projects are completed as at end of May. 69 are under-construction and 16 are at pre-construction.

Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure

Ten projects are completed, 29 are under construction which are to be completed by the end of financial year and 33 are at pre-construction level.

Sports, Arts and Culture

Ten projects are completed which are mainly libraries and 18 are under construction.

Agriculture and Rural Development

Six projects are completed mostly irrigation schemes and 34 under construction. There are 74 new projects.

Resolutions

Exco has approved Limpopo Economic Development Agency Bill. The Bill completes the amalgamation of parastatals like Lim Dev, TIL, Libsa. All of which have formed a single entity called LEDA. The objectives are to enable the acceleration of the economic development and diversify in the provincial industrial base and to increase the competitiveness of the provincial economy in the fields of agriculture, commerce, housing industry, mining, training, tourism, public transport and other businesses. It also seek to provide leadership by preventing sporadic, uncoordinated, incoherent economic development projects which are not in line with provincial policy.

The Executive Council has approved the hosting of Agro Processing Summit to be held in August 2015. The Agro Processing industry is among the sectors identified by the Industrial Policy Action Plan, the New Growth Path and the National Development Plan for its potential to increase economic growth and create employment because of its strong backward linkage with the primary agricultural sector.

The summit will exploit the value chain opportunities. The Limpopo Provincial Government developed an Agro Processing Strategy for the province in 2012. The strategy was commissioned and developed in collaboration with LEDET as the economic sector leader. The strategy serves as a guiding strategic framework for Agro Processing sector development and for government integrated planning.

The Executive Council has resolved to visit Taueatsoala village, of Mogalakwena Municipality on the 3th July 2015 as part of its Imbizo outreach programme. The Imbizo is designed to strengthen communication between government and people of Limpopo.
