Limpopo on death of three children in Mokopane

Limpopo Provincial Government is saddened by the accidental death of three children over the weekend

The Limpopo Provincial Government is saddened by the accidental death of three children over the weekend. The children allegedly had snack chips they picked from the street at Extension 19 Sekgakgapeng in Mokopane. Shortly after consuming those chips, they started having complications until they were taken to hospital.

One child was admitted at Mokopane hospital, three at Voortrekker hospital. Unfortunately, three children succumbed to injuries inflicted on their bodies by the substance contained in the chips they consumed on that fateful day. Since this initial incident, two more children have been admitted at Voortrekker hospital and are receiving medical treatment.

The cause of death remains unknown and our District Control Outbreak response teams together with Municipal Environment officials are busy conducting investigations on site. Specimen have been collected and sent to the lab for further investigation.

We edge members of the communities to allow both SAPS and the Department of Health to conduct a thorough investigation and share information that could lead to a closure of this matter. We appeal to community members to work with the police and remain calm while different law enforcement agencies attend to this tragic incident.

We appeal to all the parents to advice their children to refrain from eating any other food they may pick up from the street.

As government, we wish to send a message of condolences to the bereaved families.  We wish them strength during this trying times.
