Being the worst performing district both in the province (Eastern Cape) and national, the Libode District has taken upon itself to revive the spirits of learners and teachers ahead of the National final examinations.
The district recently launched the Learner Attainment Improvement Strategy (LAIS) recovery plan which will be used to ‘conquer the enemy-underperforming in Grade12 Class’. The plan which will see the district implementing extra ordinary measures which are geared towards ensuring that there is change in the current situation.
According to the District Director, Soyisile Nuku, High School principals have been workshoped and consultations are still being made with other education stakeholders too. “Inputs are acceptable to change the situation from all schools of this district in order to achieve the National set target of 70 percent. In fact it is desirable to ensure that all learners pass at the end of the year,” explained Nuku.
The plan will include camps where learners will be taught in schools for morning, night and weekend classes. “We have already mobilised communities behind this project for essentials like security, cooking for learners and food donations for learners who will be attending these camps,” said Nuku. He added by saying that there is an activity plan for every intervention such as evening, morning and weekend classes.
Nuku emphasized that the success of this intervention is not resting on students only but ‘to the whole community, parents, teachers and traditional leaders and therefore everyone needs to play their part’. The weekend classes will start from the 10th of August 2012.
