The Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities is concerned at the ongoing road accidents that have claimed more than 1000 people during this festive season.
The department is concerned that, as a result of road accidents, many people lose their lives unnecessarily or become disabled. It is particularly painful where innocent children lose their lives, get disabled or orphaned as a result of the reckless actions of irresponsible road users.
All South Africans have a responsibility to join government’s efforts to promote responsible and safe driving. The unnecessary loss of innocent lives should not be allowed to continue. As we approach the end of the year, the situation may bring even more pain and agony to more families unless all road users decide to act responsibly on the roads and respect other road users.
All road users have a responsibility to reduce the carnage on our roads and to prevent unnecessary loss of lives. The department wishes to remind all our road users that reckless driving, speed, fatigue, failure to observe the rules of the road and drunken driving are the main killers on our roads.
We urge drivers to rest at regular intervals when they undertake long distance trips. Those who violate traffic rules and put the lives of fellow road users at risk must face the full might of the law.
