The venue for the Portfolio Committee meeting on Transport scheduled for 25 October 2012 has now been moved to Port Elizabeth, not as earlier stated. These changes are due to the Public Transport Summit hosted by the Department of Transport, which is also taking place this week from the 24 to 26 October 2012, in Port Elizabeth.
As an oversight body to the department, members of the Portfolio Committee on Transport shall attend this summit. However, the Committee also resolved to shift their meeting to a convenient venue in ensuring that the Legislature programme is not compromised.
The Legislature has a constitutional obligation to exercise oversight role on all organs of the state including public entities. It is against this background therefore that various Legislature Committees embark on vigorous oversight on specific provincial departments.
