Sixty-five learners from Tikelo and Masizakhe Primary School from rural schools in Heidelberg will be taught to grow vegetables and conserve nature during the youth camp starting from Friday the 16 to 17 October 2010 in Suikerbbosrand Nature Reserve.
This is an annual event targeting learners from former disadvantaged schools organised by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development aimed at empowering learners on environmental education and food security during the world food month celebrations. The focus of this year's camp is to teach learners to develop food gardens at both home and schools as part of food supplement, environmental issue like clean and green, recycling, landcare issue and water management and tree planting to mitigate climate change.
Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development a (GDARD) is mandated and committed to create vibrant, equitable and sustainable rural communities contributing towards food security for all in the Gauteng Province. This is part of department's commitment to transfer skills and create awareness for the plight of the world's hungry and malnourished people and to encourage people to take action against hunger.
The learners will be addressed by Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, MEC for Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and departmental partners.
