Learners to participate in School Holiday Programme

The Gauteng Department of Education together with the Gauteng Department of Social Health have appointed facilitators, caregivers and site managers for the School Holiday Programme which runs from 5 to 9 December 2011.

The programme will reach more than 102 427 learners from 109 sites and they will be provided with nutrition. A total of 1133 people have been employed as caregivers and site managers.

The programme is aimed at ensuring that Gauteng’s youth stay safe; stay entertained and gain knowledge during the holiday period. Learners will be involved in school based activities such as football; netball; volleyball; table tennis.

They will also learn how to swim, play touch rugby, chess, and indigenous games which includes incuva, kgati, morabaraba, khokho and dibeke. Participants will be from all grades including schools and Community hubs across Gauteng.

Love Life facilitators will promote healthy living as well as educating the learners on HIV/AIDS. Learners will also be counselled on substance abuse as well as life skills.

Through the school holiday programme the department is creating expanded opportunities for learners from disadvantaged background by exposing them to various places of interest in the province.

Each district will be allocated five buses that will transport the learners to various heritage sites as part of the programme dubbed “know your province campaign”. The sites that will be visited are the Johannesburg Zoo, Freedom Park, Constitutional Hill, Maropeng and Gold Reef City.
