A 24 year old learner correctional official from the Western Cape undergoing basic training at the Kroonstaad College passed on this afternoon after a firearm reportedly went off accidentally during training.
The Department of Correctional Services and the South African Police Services (SAPS) have immediate launched internal and external investigations respectively to establish circumstances that led to the apparent accidental shooting of the young male trainee from the Brandvlei Management Area in the Western Cape. The name of the deceased has been withheld pending the briefing of the next of kin and relatives.
Acting National Commissioner Nontsikelelo Jolingana expressed shock and disbelief at the news of the tragic death of the learner. “It is with great sadness to learn of this fatal shooting of the young men, and our prayers and thoughts are with his family and relatives”, said Acting Commissioner Jolingana this afternoon, 28 February 2011.
The learner was badly injured in the head and rushed to hospital where he was declared dead after this afternoon.
