In an effort to spread the message of support to those who have been affected by the HIV epidemic, the Department of Transport’s Wellness Unit held a Candle Light Memorial at the Head Office in King Williams Town on 18 June.
The Candlelight Memorial services are an opportunity for people to pay their respects to those who have died of AIDS and to come together to share their stories and to express their commitment to HIV awareness.
"We are mobilising for a world where people do not die of AIDS and where people living with HIV can live in good health and with dignity", said Sindiswa Magwebu, Wellness Unit Assistant Director.
Candlelight Memorial provided an opportunity:
- to commemorate loved ones who have lost their lives to HIV
- to pledge solidarity with people living with HIV
- to raise awareness around HIV within the department
- to reduce HIV related stigma and discrimination against key populations, including men who have sex with men, people who use drugs, sex workers and young people.
