Law must take its course for arrested police officers after man dies in cells, said MEC Max

The Minister for Community Safety, Advocate Lennit Max, condemned the alleged brutality by eight Khayelitsha based police officials after a detainee died in police custody.

Max said that the behaviour that the police officials displayed is both cruel and despicable and will never be condoned while he is in office.

This is not the behaviour befitting any officer in the police force. Police officers are trained and employed to defend the right of citizen’s right to live.

Such callous acts threaten to destroy the faith that the public have in the police and bring the good work of fellow police officers that took years to establish to nothing.

Max said that he will follow the trial of the implicated officers with a hawk’s eye and will use all the powers that he has to ensure that justice for the victim will prevail.

Police officers must uphold high standards and defend the constitution with proud character and integrity.

He will also request the Provincial Commissioner Mzwandile Petros to institute disciplinary actions against the officers involved without delay.
