Thongathi (Tongaat) mall engineer to testify before the Commission of inquiry on his “models”

Dr Andre Ballack, the structural Engineer from Axion Consulting Engineers, who was responsible for the design of the doomed Thongathi (Tongaat) Mall will on Thursday and Friday (4-5 December) give his testimony before the Commission on the causes of the structural collapse of the Mall.

Ballack is expected to lay bare how he designed the structure of the doomed Mall.

The Thongathi (Tongaat) Mall Commission of Inquiry was appointed last year following the structural collapse of the Mall that led to the death of two workers and injury to 29. The Section 32 hearing, was instituted by the Department of Labour in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act - to gather evidence on negligence that may have resulted in occupational injuries and death of workers.

The Commission has been having hearings since February. It is expected to round-off its work during the first quarter of 2015.

The Inquiry is held at the North Coast Town’s Municipality offices. It starts at 9am.
