Labour stops construction work after a worker is buried alive

Labour inspectors have banned all excavation work at the construction site of the new Mantsopa Hospital in Ladybrand, Free State after a construction worker was buried alive in a trench yesterday.

The construction worker was busy working inside a three meter trench taking measurements of the soil levels when excavated sand fell on, killing him instantly.

Preliminary investigations have found that the constructor, Group Five and Tshepo ya Rona VJ, had notified the Department of Labour of the construction work taking place on the site. Inspectors are currently probing circumstances surrounding the tragedy that befell the worker.

Meanwhile the department is also assisting the employer and the family of the deceased with preparing the relevant documents for The Compensation Fund as well as Unemployment Insurance Fund.

The Department of Labour urges all employers and employees to ensure that workplaces comply with the regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant, conveyed her condolences to the family of the deceased.
