Labour investigates capsized crane at Khi Solar One

Department investigates incident of capsized crane at Khi Solar One, Upington

The Department of Labour has dispatched a team led by the Occupational Health and Safety Specialist Inspector to investigate an incident at Khi Solar One site, 20km outside Upington where six employees where injured and two fatalities were reported when a Crawler Crane capsized during a freak storm and crushed three office containers on 3 November 2014.

The team is currently on the scene conducting the investigation in line with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) 85 of 1993 and its regulations and hopes to start compiling their preliminary report at the end of this week.

The Department of Labour has conducted recent inspections on this site on 22 and 23 October 2014 to ensure the safety of employees and every person who might be affected by the construction’s activities. Once completed, the department’s report with findings will be forwarded to the National Director of Public Prosecution to peruse and apply their mind.
