Labour inspectors shut down Randburg Bakery

Gauteng Department of Labour ordered a closure of a Randburg Bakery in Randburg yesterday, due to exposed electrical wires which were covered in flour dust and posing a danger to workers. Labour inspectors served the owner of Fantastic Bakery with a prohibition notice for non-compliance on Occupational Health Safety Act and were informed that the notice will be revoked on compliance. Six workers were sent home while labour inspectors marked the bakery entrance and machinery with Department of Labour warning tape.

The department said the decision was taken with the view of unsafe conditions as well as the unhygienic handling of food at the bakery. The facility is in a poor state due to poor maintenance and had become inhabitable for both workers and customers. The prohibition Notice prevents the employer and employees to use/occupy the bakery until submitting a certificate of electrical compliance for all electrical installations on the building, risk assessments and maintenance records for all electrical equipments in the bakery. Failure to do so will ensure that the matter will be handed to the Public Prosecutor for the action he may deem necessary.

Follow-up inspection shall be conducted on the employer to check the compliance with the prohibition notice which was issued.
