Dozens of Department of Labour inspectors are to turn their attention to the burgeoning security industry to establish compliance with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and others.
Page Boikanyo, departmental spokesperson, said the weeklong inspections will start on Monday 15 November across all provinces.
“This is part of our goal of ensuring compliance with all the labour laws. Teams of inspectors will look at anything starting with the Unemployment Insurance Fund compliance to checking if workers are issued with proper payslips. Most importantly and in line with the Decent Work Agenda, we will establish if workers operate in healthy and safe workplaces.
The aim of the Decent Work Agenda is to strengthen the fundamental principles and rights at work, the promotion of employment creation and strengthening as well as broadening social protection coverage to include vulnerable workers operating in the informal economy that continue to absorb an increasing number of the unemployed.
The security industry employs over 100 000 people and is, according to labour analysts, one of the fastest rising sectors.
The campaign forms part of the long line of similar raids in various sectors by the department which kicked off in February when the department vowed to “stop at nothing to ensure compliance.’’
