The Month-long Labour Laws Roadshows which drew thousands of stakeholders from government, business and organised labour across the country are coming to an end tomorrow (Friday, 6), with the last event scheduled for Pretoria.
The event, to be attended by the top brass of the Department of Labour (DoL) and Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), will focus on the changes that followed the signing of several amendments to labour laws into law by the President at the beginning of the year.
The labour laws in question that were recently reviewed, and are now in force include:
- The Basic Conditions of Employment Amendment Act (BCEA)
- The Labour Relations Amendment Act
- The Employment Equity Amendment Act
- The Employment Services Act (no 4 of 2014) assented and gazetted on 7th
- April 2014. Promulgation to follow
The amendments are in response to increased informalisation of labour and are to ensure that vulnerable categories of workers receive adequate protection and are employed in conditions of decent work.
These amendments are meant to:
- Enhance the effectiveness of the primary labour market institutions such as the Labour Court, the CCMA, the Essential Services Committee and the labour inspectorate
- Strengthen the implementation of Employment Equity and enhance equal treatment in the workplace
- Re-position the public employment service.
Meanwhile, addressing dozens of enthusiastic stakeholders in Rustenburg, North West Province, on Thursday, Martin Ratshivhanda of the DoL’s Public Employment Services said the department was well placed to champion the registration and placement of work-seekers as it was “Close to the heartbeat of the labour market”.
The last roadshow scheduled for Pretoria tomorrow, will as usual start at 9h00 and end at 13h00 at the CSIR Conference Centre in Meiring Naude Road in Pretoria.
