Labour calls on stakeholders to submit written inputs on COIDA Law

Compensation fund makes an impassioned plea to stakeholders for inputs to shape COIDA Law

The Department of Labour Compensation Fund has called on stakeholders to submit written inputs in order to influence the COIDA amendments before they become law.

The inputs should reach the Fund by December 18, Irish Lephotho, Administrative Officer in the Legal Services of the Fund, told a meeting in Rustenburg, North West on Tuesday. The meeting was part of the Funds public hearings dealing with amendments of COIDA.

“It is important for stakeholders to make written inputs following the publishing of the COIDA amendments Bill on October 18,” he said.

The process that preceded the drafting of the Bill includes the proposal by the  Minister to include all categories of workers, in particular domestic workers. The next step was to consider the improvement of benefits. The Minister  then asked the Fund’s Board to start amending the COIDA Law as it stands, which led to consultations with State Law advisers, Treasury as well as the Department of Justice.

Following this, the Bill was taken to NEDLAC where social partners from Business, Labour, Government and the community made further inputs. It was then moved to the Director General’s economic cluster to see the impact it has on the Department of Labour.

Then the Minister introduced the Bill to cabinet which then requested that she publishes it for public comment before it becomes law, hence the public hearings.

The COID Amendment Bill public hearings roadshow started on 19 November in Upington.
