Labour adjusts minimum wage for Forestry Sector workers

Department of Labour adjusts minimum wage for workers in the vulnerable Forestry Sector in South Africa

The Department of Labour wishes to announce that the minimum wage for workers in the vulnerable Forestry Sector in South Africa has been adjusted upwards beginning 1 April 2014.

The wages in terms of the new sectoral determination as entailed in the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) will be effected as per the table below.

  • The wage increase from 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2014 will be 98% of the farm worker wage.
  • The wage increase from 1 April 2014 to 31 March 2015 will be 100% of the farm worker wage.

 

The employment of forestry workers, a sector deemed vulnerable, is governed by legislation which determines a sets of minimum wages, number of leave days, working hours and termination rule.

The sectoral determination of Forestry Sector covers workers in commercial and emergent timber growers; all transportation; contractors; all transportation within the sector; and domestic workers employed on premises where forestry activities take place including security guards who are not with the private security sector.

This sectoral determination shall be binding with effect from 1 April  2014 to 31 March 2015.
