Koster traffic officer kills girlfriend after quarrel

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa is saddened by reports that a 39 years old North West Provincial traffic inspector stationed at Koster is alleged to have shot two people, killing his 30 years old girlfriend and wounding her younger sister aged twenty on the arm on Thursday evening.

The 39 years old traffic officer is alleged to have been involved in a quarrel with his girlfriend around six o’clock before shooting the two with his service firearm and fleeing the scene of the crime.

Police who are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder managed to trace the suspect through a vehicle tracking system to Silwerkrans. The suspect fled Silwerkrans and overturned his vehicle on the gravel road between Madikwe and Groot Marico and shot at police who had located him. Police waited for backup that included the dog-unit and finally arrested the suspect who is expected to appear in court on Monday to answer to charges of murder and attempted murder.

Meanwhile, MEC Yawa wishes to convey condolences to the family of the traffic officer’s girlfriend and also wish her injured sister a speedy recovery. Yawa urges law enforcement officers not to resort to violence to settle their private affairs but to seek professional counselling whenever they are confronted with situations that are unbearable.
