National Police Commissioner, General Bheki Cele and the top management of the South African Police Service (SAPS) have strongly condemned the killing of 25 year old Constable Fihliwe Mavis Bengeza.
"The cold blooded killing of a yet another police officer while attending an ATM bombing is indicative of the ruthlessness of criminals and this is also a clear representation of what our police men and women endure in their performance of their daily duties," said General Bheki Cele.
Constable Fihliwe Mavis Bengeza and a colleague, Constable Sihle Mbatha (27), were responding to a complaint of an ATM bombing at Zonkizizwe taxi rank when they were both shot. Mbatha was shot in his leg and he is recovering in hospital but Bengeza, who was shot on the face, was less fortunate. She later died in hospital.
The National Commissioner has conveyed his deepest sympathies to the family of Constable Bengeza and has wished Constable Mbatha a speedy recovery.
In the meantime the National Commissioner has requested an intensive investigation into this case and he is being kept abreast of the progress of this investigation. "I want to urge anyone that may have information to please come forward," pleaded Cele.
