Kidnapping case solved in a day and arrests made

On Monday, 30 January 2012 evening a man was called and informed that his daughter had been kidnapped. Just hours later after reporting the matter to police, the case was solved and two people arrested.

The man from Pretoria received a call late Monday evening informing him that his 30 year old daughter had been kidnapped at O.R. Tambo International Airport. He was informed that if he wanted to see her alive he needed to pay a R15 000 ransom. The father was given the opportunity to speak to his daughter who sounded distraught. She informed her dad that she had been at the airport when she was kidnapped.

The father immediately reported the case to the Police and a task team of experienced detectives from O.R. Tambo International Airport was established to investigate the kidnapping.  Within hours of receiving the case docket, the detectives followed up on clues and information that led them to a house in Cosmo City, Randburg. At the house they found a 25 year old Nigerian male as well as the complainants 30 year old daughter who had alleged that she had been kidnapped.

Police found evidence that indicated that she had never been kidnapped and that it had been a plan by her 25 year-old boyfriend and herself to obtain money from her father. Both were arrested. They will be facing charges of extortion as well as defeating the ends of justice at their appearance in the Kempton Park Regional Court tomorrow, 2 February 2012.

The South African Police Service will also be taking legal action to recover expenses incurred from this investigation by its task team. We would like to give out a stern warning that people who report false cases will not only face criminal charges that could lead to jail sentences but that we will also claim for expenses incurred in the investigation.
