The Department of Defence has noted the kidnapping of four members of the South African police force who are in Sudan to assist the Sudanese police force.
The Deputy Commander of the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Sudan, General Mdutshana, a member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), is seized with the matter and we are completely confident that it will be resolved soon.
The South African government is using all diplomatic channels to ensure the safety of these South African citizens.
Officials from the Department of Defence are in close contact with their counterparts in the South African police force and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.
The South African police force is in touch with the families of the kidnapped peacekeepers.
We wish to assure the South African public that we will pull out all stops to bring them home soon. We will communicate further information as and when we have it.
