Khutsong cleansing ceremony to be Gauteng's Heritage Day highlight

Gauteng's 2009 Heritage Day celebrations will be held in Khutsong, near Carletonville, over a two-day period from 23 to 24 September.

This will be the first time in many years that the provincial Heritage Day event is celebrated away from the Cradle of Humankind in Maropeng.

The event will be used to kick-start the reconstruction and reconciliation of Khutsong and the greater Merafong area; starting with the cleansing and healing ceremonies.

"With all the conflicts that happened in Khutsong, it is time to allow a process of healing for reconciliation. It is through reconciliation that South Africa's identity was shaped, reflecting a nation united in its diversity," said the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Nelisiwe Mbatha-Mthimkulu

The event on 24 September will be led by the Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane, together with the leadership of the province, the South African Council of Churches, traditional healers and other stakeholders within the area.
