Kei Rail gets a three year safety permit

The award winning Kei Rail project has received a three year safety permit from the Rail Safety Regulator (RSR).

The project was awarded with a one year permit in March 2008 and as a result of our steadfastness to our high safety standards RSR extended the permit to operate the line from Mthatha to AmaBhele till July 2012. “This means that RSR were very impressed with our safety standards and how we execute them. It is truly a big achievement for our rail service and means that Kei Rail offers a safe, affordable and reliable public transport service,” says Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison Ms Ghishma Barry.

The Department of Transport strongly believes in safety and our safety ethos is underlined by a strategy that is proactive instead of being reactionary. Part of the Kei Rail safety strategy is to:

* increase safety on the railway
* increase the amount of effective safety communication to our customers and staff
* create a safety culture amongst our stakeholders
* adhere to technical and operational requirements in terms of the requirement of the National Railway Safety Regulator Act 16 of 2002.
