Justice and Correctional Services Committee denies media claims

The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services vehemently denies media reports that it tried in any way to shield the head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) from any questions raised by Members of Parliament serving on the Committee.

Committee Chairperson Dr Mathole Motshekga says he had made it clear during the meeting that some questions would be better directed at Advocate Michael Masutha, Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, and that it would be unfair to expect the NPA to respond to them. In addition, the purpose of the meeting was for the NPA to brief the Committee on its 2014/15 budget and strategic plan.

The Committee also notes media reports that some Members intend to lodge a complaint with Parliament regarding Dr Motshekga’s handling of the meeting. Members are free to approach the institution if they feel the meeting was not conducted in accordance with its rules. “As Chairperson, it is my duty to protect all people in front of the Committee. This includes Members of Parliament, departments and entities,” adds Dr Motshekga.

A day before the meeting, Minister Masutha provided the Committee with his political overview of the newly-established Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services. Responding to questions from Members about the future of the NPA head Advocate Mxolisi Nxasana, Minister Masutha declined to comment on the matter, saying it was receiving President Jacob Zuma’s attention. The Minister indicated his willingness to respond to questions if the matter was referred to Parliament.
