Justice Department calls on applications for education assistance for the TRC-identified victims of apartheid

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJ&CD) calls on Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) identified victims of apartheid that were declared as such by the TRC, to apply for financial assistance for basic education, as well as for higher education and training. Applications for the 2019 academic year should reach the Department not later than 30 September 2018.

The regulations relating to assistance to victims in respect of basic education and higher education and training came into operation on 7 November 2014, providing for assistance to qualifying TRC victims and their relatives and dependants.

Regarding basic education, qualifying applicants receive educational assistance in respect of Grades R to 12 for payment of school fees, boarding fees, uniform and transport.

In terms of higher education and training, assistance is provided in respect of  adult education and training (three years); further education and training (the duration of the assistance differs depending on the nature of the studies); higher education (five years) and skills development (the duration of the assistance differs depending on the nature of the studies). The assistance covers registration fees, boarding, text book, transport and meal allowances, and a once-off allowance not exceeding R65 000 for the settlement of outstanding study debts.

The regulations are in the process of being amended further to provide for uncapped amounts in respect of tuition fees, and financial assistance to students with disabilities in respect of assistive devices and human support.

Eligible candidates who wish to apply are advised to consult the regulations for the various categories of assistance available. The regulations and application forms are available on the department’s website at www.justice.gov.za.
