The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) together with other Chapter Nine institutions wishes to express concern at the rising levels of sexual harassment and abuse taking place in our schools, including related allegations of substance abuse.
At the recent meeting of the Chapter Nine Forum, the CGE together with the Public Protector were asked to take the lead in monitoring the Jules’ High School rape case that has recently featured in the media. In this regard, the two institutions will meet with the principal of the school, the relevant South African Police Service Station Commander, and the National Prosecution Authority, to determine how this case is being investigated, and what action is being taken.
We wish to state that this is, however, merely one incident that is receiving national attention, within a context of widespread sexual harassment and abuse that occurs in schools. We also intent engaging will the Department of Education to ascertain what measures the department is putting in place in all schools to raise awareness around gender based violence, and their respond to cases of abuse.
