Joint statement on the official visit by South African Minister of Arts and Culture to Angola, Luanda

The Minister of Arts and Culture, Paul Mashatile visited Angola at the invitation of his counterpart, HE Mrs. Rosa Cruz e Silva.

The purpose of the visit included the signing of a cooperation agreement in the fields of arts and culture. This cooperation is part of taking the implementation of the Joint Commission of Cooperation (JCC) signed by the Presidents of the two sister countries

During the visit, the two Ministers visited several sites of historical importance to both countries in Luanda and Kuando Cubango Province. Together with the areas incorporated in the PoC, the Ministers agreed on the following areas of mutual significance:

  • To embark on joint projects and exchanges projects between the National Academy of Creative Arts in South Africa (NACISA) and the Institute of Arts in Angola;
  • Celebrate the 20th Anniversary Celebration of Freedom and Democracy in South Africa in Angola;
  • Develop memoranda of association (MOUs) between Freedom Park in South Africa the Augustino Neto and the Cuito Cuanavalle Memorials;
  • Participation of South Africa in the 23 March Festival to be held in Cuito Cuanavalle in 2014;
  • Share knowledge and experiences toward nation building and social cohesion programmes including how we integrate the indigenous people in our countries.

The Ministers appeal to the African and the world state parties to the UNESCO World Heritage Convention of 1972 to support efforts of the World Heritage Fund. Given the many challenges facing the African World Heritage Sites like those sites affected by conflict in places like Mali and DRC.

To this end the two countries welcome the efforts of the Chairperson of the AU Commission and that of the Director General of UNESCO to hold a fund raising site event during the AU Heads of States Summit in Addis Ababa in January 2014.
