Following a meeting between the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Minister Nzimande and the Executive Committee of the Council of the University of Limpopo, there was consensus reached that the work of a task team to review the training of health professionals at both the Medunsa and the Polokwane campuses would commence immediately. Several issues were dealt with including the importance of strengthening and consolidating the Medunsa campus as well as developing Polokwane as a health training site.
The Minister reinforced the view that health training is critical and that as much as the Task Team would focus critically on the impact of the merger, there would be an opportunity to explore ways in which the visions of both campuses could be supported and strengthened.
The Minister of Health, Minister Motsoaledi supported the initiative and welcomed the opportunity to work with Minister Nzimande and the Department of Higher Education and Training as well as the University of Limpopo in this important exercise. It is envisaged that the work of the task team would commence in November with a report to be provided to both the ministers by February 2011. Minister Nzimande welcomed the cooperative engagement of the University of Limpopo and stressed that the work and normal processes of the university will be uninterrupted.
