AfriForum Youth today had a meeting with the Ministry of Basic Education, at the ministerial offices in Cape Town. The meeting was with regard to the administration of matric results and matriculants who claim to have been impaired by maladministration.
At the meeting, three categories of complaints were identified, namely:
* Matriculants from previous years who have not received their matric certificates
* Matriculants who have received incomplete matric results
* Matriculants who have received results that doesn’t indicate their actual performance.
It was also identified that these complaints are not sufficient to justify that there is a problem with the system, but rather that certain problems have occurred because of administrative problems on grassroot level.
After the meeting, reports on the matriculant’s complaints were presented to the Minister by AfriForum Youth. Most of these complaints have been effectively addressed by the Department. The remaining complaints will be addressed in the near future.
AfriForum Youth’s national chairperson, Ernst Roets, said that he was enlightened in the effective manner in which the concerns of matriculants have been addressed thus far. Speaking on behalf of the minister, acting Director-General Bobby Soobrayan said that the rights of learners are a high priority and that the department would not hesitate to take action against any official who is found to be guilty of the violation of any matriculant’s rights.
Roets has indicated that AfriForum Youth will continue in their campaign to assist matriculants. AfriForum Youth also made an undertaking to draft a short document on matriculants’ rights and procedures that should be followed when certain problems are experienced. This document will be drafted in cooperation with the department and will be made available to matriculants who are going to write exams in future. The Ministry of Basic Education welcomed this cooperation and acknowledged the efforts of Afriforum to become partners in ensuring that the department’s objective of ensuring that the rights of learners to receive their full, correct results in time every year, are respected.
