The Johannesburg's Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) System was honoured with an Encouragement Award at the recent Public Transport Congress hosted by the International Association of Public Transport (UIPT) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The BRT received an award for promoting the use of public transport in Johannesburg.
Rea Vaya buses transport an average of over 30 000 thousand people to and from work each day. The buses give residents of Soweto and southern part of Johannesburg direct access to the inner city and surrounding areas. The buses run at regular intervals on dedicated lanes, combating traffic congestion and improving the quality of public transport. The efficiently run system has led to many private vehicle owners to park their cars in Soweto and take a Rea Vaya bus to the central business district of Johannesburg.
In addition, the Rea Vaya buses are the cleanest on the continent, running on low-sulphur diesel with the most advanced pollution reduction equipment.
"We are thrilled to receive this award in recognition of our role as a leader in Africa on public transport", Ms Rehana Moosajee, Johannesburg's Member of Mayoral Committee for Transportation said after receiving the accolade.
