Jaws impounded unroadworthy vehicles and issued fines worth R155 000

North West Traffic Authorities have discontinued 54 and impounded 56 vehicles which failed the road worthiness during special “Jaws” joined operation between the Road Traffic Management and the Matlosana Local Municipality. Traffic authorities issued about 211 traffic fines worth R155 000 to defaulting motorists, during the operation.

A total number of more than 800 vehicles were stopped and tested for roadworthiness during the four day operation. Most of the vehicles that were discontinued were illegal taxis (Tambai) operating within the Matlosana area.

The Jaws special operation was aimed at reducing the yearly increasing road fatalities in the province and the country at large. The operation further targeted unroadworthy vehicles, unlicensed drivers and passenger overloading. North West MEC for Human Settlements, public Safety and Liaison, Nono Maloyi commended traffic authorities for the smooth running and the success of the operation and said the province is committed in reducing fatalities and combating lawlessness on public roads. “We have a responsibility of making roads safer for all vehicle users on our roads and by so doing we are going to intensify our law enforcement special operations”.

MEC Maloyi said that  no unroadworthy vehicles should be found on our roads because they are likely to create accidents and we cannot afford to lose our beloved ones due to those individuals who decided to ignore or disobey the road rules and vehicle compliance on our roads,” Warned Maloyi.

The operation led police to recover a stolen engine, allegedly stolen in Okney as the case was registered at the Okney police station in 2009, and the suspect has since being sent for questioning. The impounded vehicles will only be returned to owners once they have repaired defaults identified during the roadworthiness test.
