Jaws Gnaws Chinese national for fraudulent driver’s license

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa advises foreign nationals not to opt for the easiest route in order to obtain drivers licenses but to approach their embassies, Automobile Association (AA) or relevant traffic authorities for assistance with translation of foreign driver’s licenses. This follows the arrest of a Chinese national in Mafikeng on Monday afternoon for a fraudulent IAA international drivers’ license.

The 34 years old businessman from Madibogo allegedly bought the fake driver’s license printed on a phone card like plastic material with his picture on it from a syndicate in Johannesburg for R3 000.It was supposed issued on the 25 April 2005 and valid for five years. The businessman and three other road users were arrested for not being in possession of driving licenses during a blitz by the elite public safety provincial traffic law enforcement unit nicknamed jaws for executing warrants of arrests for unpaid traffic fines. Two other road users were issued with tickets for a worn out tyre and an expired license disc respectively.

Thirty nine warrants of arrests to the value of R19 680 were executed for outstanding fines in and around Mafikeng on Monday alone. The blitz runs parallel to the month long Operation Moretlwa-Die Poppe Sal Dans on the R503 Mafikeng-Lichtenburg road which has thus far issued 1 320 traffic fines to road offenders.

The provincial Department of Public Safety advises motorists who suspect that they have outstanding traffic fines to verify with the departmental call centre on 018 381 6500 to avoid the inconvenience of being arrested as the operations to execute warrants of arrests are intensified throughout the province.
