IPID conducted Phiyega investigation independently and without fear or favour

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has noted in media reports, some speculation about the outcome of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA’s) decision not to prosecute the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Riah Phiyega.

The IPID conducted an independent investigation into allegations of defeating the ends of justice and based on all the evidence it had, it forwarded its findings to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). It must be noted that it is the NPA that decides whether to prosecute or not. In this case, the NPA agreed with the IPID’s investigative conclusions and decided not to prosecute.

The IPID remains committed to conducting independent and impartial investigations in line with its legislative mandate. We investigate without fear, favour or prejudice.
