Invitation to study medicine in Cuba

The department aims to help students with financially disadvantaged background and who want to study medicine to fulfill their dreams. The applicants must be South African Citizens who reside in the North West Province aged less than 25 years up to 31 December 2012.

Candidates must have passed Matric with minimum medical university entry requirements such as Physical Science=4, Mathematics=4, Biology/Life Sciences=4 and English=4. Applicants must be physically and mentally fit with a valid passport in their possession or have applied for one at the time of application.

Suitably qualified candidates must note that the medical training in Cuba is preceded by a 12-month Spanish-tuition course and will have to sign a contract with the department before departure. Successful candidates must commit to undertaking an orientation to South African conditions upon their return, before deployment in the Province, and must be committed to work in the most under-served areas of the Province upon completion of their studies. This excludes students already studying or who have obtained a tertiary qualification.

Through this scholarship, 282 medical students from poor background successfully completed their studies with just over 400 South African students still studying.
