investigations, fraud, ehlanzeni

The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Norman Mokoena has appointed a team of forensic investigators in terms of section 106(1)(b) of the Local Government Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (act No.32 of 2000), to conduct investigations in Ehlanzeni district municipality.

This comes after MEC Mokoena first wrote to the municipality as required by the Local Government Municipal Systems Act, 2000 requesting them to respond to the allegations of fraud, corruption and maladministration that have been levelled against them.

After receiving the response of the municipality and after considering it, MEC Mokoena has felt that there is a need for a full scale investigation.

"Such an investigation will be able to validate and corroborate the facts as submitted by the municipality, in order to compile an objective report on any allegations of fraud, corruption, or any other serious malpractices within Ehlanzeni district municipality," said Mokoena.

The mandate of the investigators will be to investigate all allegations of fraud, corruption and any other serious malpractices levelled against the district municipality.

The investigators will collect information through interviews, assessing records and subpoenaing people where necessary. The investigators are expected to complete their work within six weeks.

Once the investigations have been completed, the report will be handed to MEC Mokoena for his consideration. After considering the report, MEC Mokoena will then submit the report to Ehlanzeni District Council for consideration and actioning. MEC Mokoena will then monitor that the District Council implements the recommendations of the report.

MEC Mokoena would like to call upon everyone within the municipality who has any information to support the investigators. He has also appealed for the full cooperation of all stakeholders during the investigation.
