The City of Matlosana has accepted the extended intervention by the Provincial EXCO for another six months.
On Wednesday, 9 July, the MEC for Local Government and Human Settlement, Collen Maine, announced to the municipal council that the provincial EXCO has approved the extension of the intervention in terms of Section 139 1(b) on financial administration in Matlosana local municipality.
During his announcement Maine, also indicated EXCO approved the allocation of additional funding to the department to immediately institute a forensic investigation on alleged maladministration, corruption and contravention of supply chain processes within the municipality.
“The initial intervention was for a minimum of six months and a maximum of twelve months which means the (intervention) ended in June 2014. “The extension of the intervention means that the powers or obligations of council of Matlosana on financial management will remain with the Provincial EXCO for the duration of the intervention period which ends in December 2014,” said Maine.
The municipality was previously placed under section 139(1) (b) intervention in March 2013 as a result of the deteriorating financial status which compromised delivery of basic services to communities.
The Executive Mayor of the city, Cllr Kagiso Khauoe, said the municipality accepts both the extension and the investigation.
“We appreciate and accept the extension by EXCO and the need to institute a forensic investigation which will hopefully close down concerns regarding the alleged irregularities in our municipality,” said Khauoe.
On a positive note, the Executive Mayor also indicated that they have a common understanding and a better relationship with both Eskom and Midvaal Water Board on the arranged debt recovery plan.
