Integrated Holiday programme swings into action

With Bafana-Bafana having difficulties in their 2010 World Cup campaign, the Gauteng Integrated School Holiday programme is now in full swing with over 3 000 kids participating since the launch on 8 June.

The programme which is being implemented in 244 sites across the province including identified community centers (hubs) and schools is part of the Gauteng provincial programme aimed at keeping youth engaged during the world cup period.

The programme will run until 9 July 2010, which is four days before the schools re-opening on the 13th.

Participants take part in sporting activities such as netball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, gymnaestrada, indigenous games and arts and culture programmes including craft classes.

The programme will also include a variety of excursions and arts and crafts classes. Volunteers and site managers are on site to ensure the smooth running of the programme.

"We are glad that the programme is drawing a lot of attention not only from the youth but the parents and together with them we can ensure a positive and constructive environment for our the young people during this youth month period," said MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation; Nelisiwe Moerane.

"It is also our hope that through this programme we will identify talented young people who will go on to benefit from the department's development programme and therefore call upon all parents to bring kids in their numbers to the nearest participating sites," added the MEC.

Information on sites and hubs can be accessed on the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation's website: http://www.sacr.gpg.gov.za.
