Inspectors crack a whip on errant private security employers

The Department of Labour inspectors have this week begun to crack the whip on defaulters of private security minimum wages and conditions of employment.

With just four days into the inspections campaign which got off to a rigorous start in all parts of the province this Monday, Inspectors have already visited 138 workplaces targeting companies providing private security services.

During the current inspections, an alarming 42 employers were served with written undertakings for not complying with the basic conditions of employment as prescribed in the Private Security Sectoral Determination. Some employers were found to be underpaying their workers a monthly wage of as low as R5, 00 an hour instead of R11,32 or a monthly wage of R2,354 for a Grade D security officer.

Meanwhile Stallion and Securiforce, both security companies based in Bloemfontein were issued with undertakings after it was discovered that they make their workers pay for uniform and protective clothing which is against the law.

The blitz continues until tomorrow.
