IPID investigating another death in Mothutlung near Brits, North West - calls on witnesses to come forward

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating another death in Mothutlung, Brits in the North West province. Twenty-seven year old Lerato Seema allegedly died due to head injuries at Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital in Rustenburg on 15 January 2014.

It is alleged that on 14 January 2014, the deceased and another person were arrested in Damonsville by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Public Order Policing Unit who were patrolling the area – they were allegedly put into an SAPS Nyala armoured vehicle. It is alleged that the other person managed to escape unhurt. It is further alleged that deceased sustained head injuries after jumping off a moving Nyala. He was taken to Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital in Rustenburg, where he died at around 3h00 this morning.

An inquest docket was opened by the SAPS. The IPID has now taken over the investigation. The IPID is working hard to expedite the investigations into the two incidents – the community’s assistance is required to obtain all the relevant facts into the two cases.

No arrest has been made. The investigation continues.
