The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has noted with concern some disturbing occurrences during the wage strikes in the Platinum Belt. These include the killing of people, the destruction of property, the intimidation of non-strikers and their families, the carrying of dangerous weapons and the provocation of the police.
While the right to strike is enshrined in our Constitution, such expression should be done within the framework of the law. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has the responsibility to protect life, limb and property.
IPID Executive Director, Robert McBride said: “We urge all role players to allow the police to do their work, respect the rights of others and operate within the framework of the law. It is not the responsibility of the police alone to uphold the law. We all have the legal responsibility of respecting the rights of others. This obligation also extends to strikers themselves”.
Mr McBride went on to say: “As the IPID, we will watch the situation closely and we do not wish to see any infringement of anybody’s rights by any party. The police should not be put in a position where they have to act against individuals who break the law and then cry foul afterwards”.
Mr McBride concluded by saying: “We remain committed to conducting independent and impartial investigations in line with our legislative mandate. We will investigate without fear, favour or prejudice".
