Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) probing allegations of murder and defeating the ends of justice against two SAPS constables

The Independent Complaints Directorate is investigating cases of murder and defeating the ends of justice against two police officers. The suspects are constables based at Bronville South African Police Service (SAPS), Free State.

It is alleged that in the morning of 31 July 2010, the suspect constables were driving with a victim who had opened a case of assault grievous bodily harm (GBH) to Chris Hani Park where the suspect was allegedly hiding.

Apparently the suspect, who was with four other young males, ran away when the police vehicle parked next to a shack where they were. One of the boys ran away with the suspect.

It is alleged that one constable drew his gun and shot a 16 year old male, Aukar Sompane, who was standing next to the shack. It is alleged that the other constable then took the spent cartridge and left the scene.

An ambulance was called and the deceased was taken to hospital where he later died. The ICD took over the matter for further investigation. The suspects were arrested for murder and defeating the ends of justice and were both detained at Hennenman SAPS.

The suspects made their first appearance at the Welkom magistrate's court today, 2 August 2010. The case was postponed to 10 August 2010 for a formal bail application. The suspects will remain in custody.
