The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) is investigating two shooting incidents that took place in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal

The first incident

It was reported to the ICD that on 23 March 2012 at about 18h00 there was a shooting incident in the Inanda, Amaoti area.

The police allege that on 22 March 2012, the deceased persons committed a business robbery where they took an undisclosed amount of cash and liquor from a tavern. The tavern patrons were also robbed of their cellphones and cash. The deceased persons were allegedly wanted in connection with murder, business robbery and attempted murder cases.

On 23 March 2012 the police allegedly received information that the suspects were hiding at a certain house in Amaoti. The police allege that on their arrival at the house where the deceased persons were, they identified themselves as police and demanded that the occupants of the house open the door. The occupants of the house allegedly fired shots at the police while the doors were closed. The police returned fire fatally wounding seven people.

The names of the deceased cannot be released until their next of kin have been notified. They are aged between 20 and 25 years.

The second incident

This incident took place on 24 March 2012 at about 11h40.

It is alleged that the police were following up on information of a suspect who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The police allegedly approached the suspect and he ran into the bushes. It is alleged that the suspect fired shots at the police and the police returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect.

The deceased was identified as Mr Siyabonga Khumalo, who is 30 years old.

The dockets have been taken over for full investigation by the ICD’s KwaZulu-Natal office. Post mortems will be held on 28 to 29 March 2012 for all deceased in both shooting incidents. The investigation continues.
