The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) has taken over the investigation of a shooting incident in which a 19 year old male, Nazier Africa of Mitchells Plain, was shot by a police officer.
It is alleged that police attended a complaint in Mitchells Plain and members of the public allegedly threatened members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) with knives and other weapons. A warning shot was fired and then a house was entered where a reserve member observed a person (the deceased) closing the door. A shot was discharged and a bullet went through the door hitting the deceased in the head.
The deceased was transported to hospital where he died at 07h55. The reserve member was arrested by another SAPS officer. The ICD was notified after the death and went on to reconstruct the scene. A post mortem will be attended by the ICD on Monday, 10 May 2010.
The ICD is investigating possible charges of murder against the reservist. The suspect will appear at Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court on Monday, 10 May 2010.
