The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) has arrested two Pampierstad South African Police Service (SAPS) based officers for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH). Sergeant Sylvester Mayoyo (46) and Constable Jansen Gaebee (38) were arrested for assaulting a 28 year old male, Mr Patrick Sethetho in Pampierstad on the evening of 17 November 2010. The policemen were on duty at the time of the incident.
It is alleged that Mr Sethetho went to his friend’s house and found the two policemen who were called to intervene in a conflict between the victim’s friend and his wife. It is alleged that the police asked the victim to leave. An argument ensued that resulted in the policemen assaulting Mr Sethetho. It is further alleged that after the assault the two officers left the victim badly injured at the scene of crime without making arrangements to have the victim taken to hospital to receive medical attention.
The ICD arrested Sgt Mayoyo and Cst Gaebee on 19 November 2010 and they were charged with Assault GBH. The accused officers appeared before the Pampierstad Magistrates Court today, 22 November 2010. The case has been postponed to 14 December 2010 to allow the policemen to arrange a legal representative. They were granted bail of R300 each.
