The Gauteng Department of Health has released more money to pay its suppliers and has to date paid all small, medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs).
An amount of R7.7 million relating to prior year invoices were audited as per the prepayment audit process and released last week to reflect in the suppliers’ bank accounts yesterday. This amount includes payments to SMMEs.
The department had developed a prepayment audit process to verify all invoices submitted by supplies. Invoices that are verified as payable will be paid on a weekly basis with the approval of the Chief Financial Officer.
An amount of R24 million is currently undergoing a prepayment audit.
Also, to strengthen the delivery of health service in the province, the Department filled 2259 critical funded vacant posts between April and November 2012.
These appointments include 752 nurses, 595 clinical professionals (doctors and specialists), 528 allied professionals (physiotherapists and others), 41 allied support, 71 managers, 397 administration and 144 support staff.
The process of filling posts is negatively affected by the scarcity of skills in the country.
All these efforts are part of the implementation of the Department’s Turnaround Strategy 2012-2014 which aims to improve healthcare in the province.
Health MEC, Mr Hope Papo says, “To ensure better health for all, the Department will continue with initiatives such as paying suppliers timeously, beefing up staff in health facilities and ensuring the availability of medicine in all public health facilities in the province.”
