The strike action launched by the Public Service Association (PSA) today, Thursday, 29 July has had no major impact on essential services being rendered by the Department of Home Affairs namely, the immigration and civics services.
In this regard only four percent of the 8 000 total number of staff members employed by the Department of Home Affairs did not report for duty due to support of the strike action. Areas affected mainly were the Oliver Tambo and Cape Town International Airports.
Despite the strike action at Oliver Tambo and Cape Town International Airports, the department continued to utilise measures it had in place during the 2010 FIFA World Cup to render essential services at the two airports without any major disruptions.
In Pretoria, the department continues to utilise the operational centre, created for the purposes of monitoring traveller movement for the duration of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, to monitor and receive reports on a daily basis regarding the impact of the strike action.
The Department of Home Affairs reassures the public that it will continue to render essential services to ensure there is no disruption to traveller and tourist movement in and out of the country while delivering critical services to citizens with regard to the issuance of passports, identity documents (IDs), permits and various forms of certificates.
