Illegal immigrants arrested in the Free State

Free State law enforcement officers arrested 795 illegal immigrants in a law enforcement operation led by MEC for Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State, Honourable Butana Komphela together with Minister of Transport, Honourable Dipuo Peters yesterday.

The operation took place on the R26 road in Ficksburg near Maputsoe border gate and on the N8 road near Maseru border gate yesterday. 71 people were also arrested for being in possession of drugs and ammunition. The drugs included mandrax and marijuana.

Our law enforcement officers have been busy since the start of the holidays. 14 026 vehicles were stopped and screened since Wednesday, 16 April 2014 and about 10 358 people were searched. 1 468 fines were issued to motorists for various infringements. 57 vehicles were discontinued and 5 vehicles were impounded.

MEC Butana Komphela would like to remind motorists that they can cut the number of accidents if they follow traffic rules and regulations at all times. If they can use seatbelts, stop speeding, stop overtaking on barrier lines, if they can refrain from drinking and driving and lastly if they can keep their vehicles in good conditions. If we all adopt these simple measures and become responsible citizens we can safe many lives.

Our law enforcement officers will continue to patrol all our roads during these holidays to ensure safety of all South Africans travelling in the Free State.
