Ikhaya Lethemba the one stop centre for abused women and children was on the spotlight yesterday to receive major financial boost from Anglo American. Other companies such as PUTCO, ICTV and Radio, Manenzhe Group, Mabhoda General Trading Enterprise donated a fridge, computer, TV set and sound system, toys and other essentials as part of Mandela Day. The centre has always relied on government funds to cover maintenance, food, clothing, transportation to courts and schools across the province etc.
Anglo American donated R500 000. Responding to the donation MEC Mazibuko applauded the contribution and appeal to more to join in. “If only we could have more companies doing their corporate social responsibility part to centres such as Ikhaya Lethemba, that we will strengthen the conviction rate as some of the needs are crucial to successful prosecution” said the MEC.
The Labour Sector that works with the department participated in a COSATU led event n Jacob’s Farm, outskirts of Springs. 17 beds, 12 wardrobes, blankets, food parcels, clothes and school uniforms were donated to destitute families. Faith Based Sector that also works with the department painted houses planted vegetable gardens for senior citizens in Devon as part of the 67 minutes campaign.
The MEC together with the executive Mayor of Lesedi Municipality Lerato Maloka and officials, painted 18 houses in Komau in Heidelberg and distributed food parcels to the community of Komau and surrounding areas. Farming starter packs and gardening equipment donated by Gauteng Department of Agriculture were also distributed.
