IEC's intergrity remains intact

The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs has noted the judgment by the Constitutional Court regarding the Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Advocate Pansy Tlakula.

As the matter runs it natural course, the Committee is of the view that the integrity of the IEC as an institution supporting democracy remains intact. The Committee has full confidence in the other Commissioners and senior management team of the IEC in continuing to drive forward the mandate of the commission. The Constitution as well as the legal framework that facilitated the establishment of the Commission remains the bedrock on which the Commission is based.

Furthermore, the ruling bears no direct impact on the IEC’s ability to deliver on its constitutionally guaranteed mandate of ensuring free and fair elections. The recent local government by-elections in various parts of the country, held in the absence of Advocate Tlakula, attest to the strength of the internal mechanisms and structures of the IEC.

As part of its oversight programme, the Committee will be meeting the Commission next week Tuesday to discuss the IEC’s role and mandate as well as to discuss issues that require immediate attention. This meeting will also enhance the working relationship between Chapter 9 institutions and Parliament necessary for an effective democracy.

The Committee will continue to play its oversight role over the IEC to ensure that the institution continues its work of ensuring a viable and vibrant democracy.
